The Hex icons in UnderMine are meant to illustrate particularly brutal, optional, game conditions designed around adding longevity to the end-game. As these are designed to be a step above the difficulty traditionally added with the game's negative status effects (Curses), I wanted to really push the visuals into a visually striking and distinct format, separate from the standard icons. Some of the ways I achieved this were by creating an intense, unique palette (grounded in the game's pre-established Curse-purple), maximizing space within the available boundaries, approaching different kinds of lighting and utilizing more abstract visual concepts.
